The Julian Alps Adventure Packing Guide: What to Bring for Slovenia

The Julian Alps pack a lot of different adventures into a small corner of Slovenia — you can hike a river gorge in the morning, canyon in the afternoon, fly a paraglider off a ridge the next day, and drift over Lake Bled in a balloon at dawn. Each one asks for slightly different kit. Here is what actually earns its place in your bag, activity by activity, plus the everyday layers that work for all of them.

The layers that work for every day out

Alpine weather changes fast, so dress in three layers you can add and shed: a wicking base layer, an insulating mid-layer (a light fleece or synthetic puffy), and a waterproof, breathable shell. Even in July, valley mornings near Lake Bled and Bohinj can start in single digits before climbing into the mid-20s by afternoon. A buff, a sun hat, and proper sunglasses matter more than most people expect at altitude, where the UV is stronger than at home.

Good footwear is the one thing worth spending on. For the Emerald River hike through the Triglav National Park, a broken-in pair of trail shoes or light hiking boots with a real lugged sole beats fashion trainers on wet limestone and tree roots.

Canyoning: everything gets wet

For canyoning in the Julian Alps, the technical kit — wetsuit, helmet, harness — is provided by the operator. Your job is what goes underneath and what you leave behind.

  • Swimwear worn under the wetsuit, plus a snug base layer if you feel the cold.
  • Old trainers or sticky-soled water shoes you are happy to soak; open sandals are a no.
  • A towel and a full change of warm, dry clothes waiting in the car for afterwards.
  • No valuables in the canyon. Phones, watches and car keys stay behind unless the guide offers a sealed dry bag.

Paragliding and ballooning: warmth and steady hands

A tandem paragliding flight over Lake Bohinj and a dawn balloon ride over Lake Bled share the same surprise: it is colder up there than on the ground, and the light is spectacular. Pack a warm layer and a windproof jacket even on a hot day, closed shoes (trainers or boots, never sandals or flip-flops), and gloves in shoulder season.

For photos, use a wrist strap or, better, a phone leash — dropping a phone from a paraglider or a balloon basket means losing it for good. Ballooning is a dawn activity, so a hat and a thermos of something warm for the pre-flight wait are small luxuries that pay off.

A simple packing checklist

Copy this and tick it off the night before:

  • Base layers (top and bottom), one warm mid-layer, waterproof shell
  • Trail shoes for hiking; old wet shoes for canyoning
  • Swimwear, quick-dry towel, full change of dry clothes
  • Sun hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm
  • 1L+ water bottle and a couple of snacks
  • Phone with a leash or strap, a small dry bag, a little cash for the hut or café
  • Any personal medication, plasters, and a light first-aid basics kit

Get the layers and footwear right and everything else is detail. When you have picked your days, the operator — 3glav Adventures run all four of these — will tell you exactly what they provide so you are never carrying kit you did not need.
